Amtrak Empire Builder passenger train at East Auburn, WA

Amtrak Empire Builder passenger train at East Auburn, WA

The original NP line over Stampede Pass went into Tacoma. In September 1900 the Northern Pacific completed the Palmer Cut-off between Palmer and Auburn. This improved operations considerably by eliminating many bridges and reducing the grade from 1.7 percent to one percent. The westbound Empire Builder pauses briefly at East Auburn on March 19, 1973. At the junction, the train will turn right and head north to Seattle. The exNorthern Pacific line over Stampede Pass still had semaphore signals. Disk 8
