UP First 692 rolls by the water tower at Vader, WA on a cloudy July 2, 1979. Engine 3226 is joined by a foreigner to the Northwest, MKT 601. The Katy unit was a regular on the BN and MKT coal trains between Halstead, TX and the Powder River Basin. I don't know how it wound up on the Union Pacific in Washington. For those into details, the elevation here at Vader is 142 feet above sea level.

Further south the train is approaching Kalama. The Northern Pacific began building north from Kalama in 1871 and completed the Prairie Line to Tacoma in December 1873. The line south of Kalama to Portland was completed in 1901. Disk 9
