Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad

The Milwaukee Road had an interesting operation at Black River.

East of the wye is a small yard used by the Milwaukee for Seattle traffic. Westbound trains would setout their Seattle cars in this yard. A switch engine would come down from Seattle about twice a day with cars for eastbound trains, pickup the Seattle cars, and then return.

With the success from its electrification of lines in Montana, the Milwaukee Road decided to electrify the section between Othello and Tacoma in 1917. This was completed in March 1920 and the section north to Seattle in July 1927. I got to Seattle too late to see any of the electrics run as the electrification was shut off on the Coast Division in 1972. Any photographs of trains along these lines from the 20s until the 80s included lots of power poles. On February 19, 1973 Extra 5502 West is setting out its Seattle cars and then heads south to Tacoma. Disk 7
