Burlington Northern freight train exiting GN Cascade Tunnel

You are in the CarrTracks website Picture Gallery.

The first Cascade Tunnel was completed in 1900 to replace the switchbacks over the top of the pass. After the horrible avalanche at Wellington that killed 96 people on March 1, 1910, the Great Northern began building the Cascade Tunnel. The tunnel and line relocation was opened in January 1929. The tunnel is eight miles long and has a 1.7% grade against eastbound trains.
