Gas Turbine 26 was among the last of the third generation of gas turbine locomotives delivered to the Union Pacific in 1961. The first and second generation of gas turbines were delivered between 1948 and 1954. They generated 4,500 horsepower. The third generation was delivered between 1958 and 1961 and generated 8,500 horsepower. These units operated primarily on the Overland Route between Ogden and Council Bluff, Iowa until retired in 1970. Only two of these monsters are preserved.
