Union Pacific Railroad Valmy coal train at the Geneva cross-over

Union Pacific Railroad Valmy coal train at the Geneva cross-over Union Pacific engines 9113, 3326, and 9101 on the Valmy coal train at Geneva, Utah

Engines 9113, 3326, and 9101 pull the Valmy coal train through the Geneva cross-over on June 3, 1989. The Valmy coal fired power plant started operating in 1981 with a 265 megawatt unit and added another in 1985. The plant is near Battle Mountain, Nevada. The Union Pacific had a single track branch running south from Salt Lake City to Provo. To avoid the steep hill in the middle of this branch, the UP got trackage rights from the Geneva cross-over north to Salt Lake City over the D&RGW in 1985 in exchange for D&RGW trackage rights over UP between Salt Lake City and Ogden. The Utah Transit Authority now uses the former branch as its right of way for 15 miles to Sandy. The TRAX line opened in December 1999. Disk 30
