The line from Rosenberg to Victoria was built by the New York, Texas & Mexican Railway between 1880 and 1882. The railway was acquired by the SP in 1885. The Gulf, Western Texas & Pacific Railway constructed a line from Victoria to Beeville between 1888 and 1889. This railway was also acquired by the SP.
From information I gathered at Tower 17, I knew there would be an eastbound train out of Victoria headed to Houston about noon. Since I was going in the opposite direction I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the train's headlight before it slipped by me. At the time the SP was running two or three trains a day on this branch between Rosenberg and Victoria. It was starting to spit a little bit of rain when I caught SP engines 3360 and 3717 rolling through Ganado on October 21, 1977. Ganado is at milepost 57 as measured from Tower 17 in Rosenberg.
