Southern Pacific train number 87 is on its way to Fort Worth in the last few moments of sunshine on June 21, 1986. The train has engines 6508, 4821, 7812, and 4810 pulling 93 cars. As the traffic picked up on this train, SP officials soon discovered the Broadway Yard in Fort Worth was too small to handle all of the cars for both the inbound and outbound trains at the same time. The schedule was altered so a train left Fort Worth between 8:00PM and 10:00PM. The crew then exchanged trains at Ennis and returned in the early morning hours. During the daytime, a switch crew move the interchange cars to various small yard around Tower 55. Also during the day there would be several transfer moves from other railroads that would drop off cars for the evening train.
