February 24, 1990 was not a good day for the second section of train 578. The first section left Dallas, TX around 600AM and 2-578 left about two hours later with engines 1564 and Conrail 6345 pulling 36 loads. Just out of Venus, a short in the electrical system killed both engines. There was not enough juice in the batteries of the Santa Fe unit to run the radio and call the dispatcher. Even the handset couldn't reach out far enough to make contact even though you can see downtown Dallas from here. The conductor had to walk to a nearby farm house and call on a land line to notify authorities of their plight. While engines 1564 and Conrail 6345 sit still, I decided to grab a couple pictures. The train has 36 loads of containers and piggyback trailers. Disk 107
