On May 9, 1978 I was headed to Dallas to take a new job. I saw a westbound MP train leaving Longview and gave chase. Just about a mile west of Gladwater, it met eastbound train symbol FLY (Fort Worth to North Little Rock - Extra 2076 East). I was on the wrong side to get a picture of the trains meeting, but after it passed I quickly jumped over to the south side of the tracks to get a better shot of the eastbound train. Gladewater is at milepost 109 as measured from Texarkana.
I got ahead of the westbound train symbol NF (New Orleans to Fort Worth - Extra 3117 West) and finally got my one and only shot of it at Big Sandy crossing the Cotton Belt mainline. As I was walking back to the car I heard another train whistling to the southwest. A short time later SP train symbol LAEST (the Merchandise) rattles over the crossing with U33C 8682 on the point. The Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the Big Sandy area in 1873. The narrow gauge Tyler Tap Railroad (Cotton Belt) crossed the T&P around 1880. This narrow gauge track was converted to standard gauge on January 12, 1887. For the Cotton Belt this is milepost 525. Disk 93
