The Houston and Great Northern and the International Railway merged in September 1873 to form the International & Great Northern Railroad Company. Before the merger the International Railway built from south from Longview reaching Palestine, in January 1873, and Hearne in September 1873. The Houston and Great Northern built north from Houston to Palestine and completed this line in May 1873. The I&GN continued building from Hearne and reached Rockdale in December 1874 and completed the line to Austin 1876. After several years of inactivity, construction began again in 1881 completing the line from Austin to San Antonio in February 1881 and on to Laredo in December 1881. The I&GN was under MKT control for many years until 1924 when it came under the control of the Missouri Pacific.
