The signal at the south end of Rice is just starting to go clear as the connection from the Merchandise goes into the siding on December 15, 1977 to meet train 258 out of Ennis. The rear brakeman is about to line the switch back for the mainline.
Train 258 (Extra 8654 East) had been waiting just north of the crossing in downtown Rice for the northbound train to get into the clear on the siding. With the increase in coal traffic and longer trains, the siding at Rice was lengthened to a little over 10,000 feet in the early 80s. During the upgrade, the classic semaphore signals were replaced with standard searchlight signals. Disk 99
