Toledo, Peoria & Western picture index

During the early 1980s, I was attending Taylor University in Upland, IN on the GI Bill. This gave me a few opportunities to go train chasing in a territory I rarely visited. Most of my train chasing trips while I was in the Navy were either south of the Mason-Dixon Line or west of the Rockies. This index covers several different trips across the East End of the TP&W in the Summer of 1982. The index begins in Indiana and moves west into Illinois.

The Toledo, Peoria & Western was incorporated in Illinois on March 28, 1887 and consolidated the operation of the Toledo, Peoria, & Warsaw Railway and the Logansport, Peoria, and Burlington Railroad. The Logansport, Peoria and Burlington Railroad built from Galesburg to East Burlington, IL in 1855, reached Gilman, IL in 1857, and Effner in 1859.

The ATSF & PRR gain joint control of TP&W in January 1960. When the Penn Central collapsed in 1976, the TP&W acquired the former Pennsylvania Railroad trackage from Effner into Logansport. ATSF absorbs TP&W in January 1984. The ATSF sold the property in 1989 and the TP&W was an independent railroad again. In 1998, TP&W had revenues of approximately $13.4 million and moved over 59,000 freight carloads and intermodal units. Rail America acquired control of TP&W stock in 1999.
