Santa Fe train 975 is rolling through tunnel No. 8 east of Cliff on July 12, 1979. The train has engines 5625, 8078, 8736, 3234, and 3401 and is headed to Dallas, TX as a run thru with the KCS for New Orleans. Tunnel No. 8 is blasted out of solid rock and only has a liner at the portals. It is 689 feet long. You can see that the railroad is in a rather precarious position along here. The SP had to use concrete retaining walls because the hillside was so steep. There is a 500 foot drop-off to the bottom of the canyon. Within two miles, Tehachapi Creek will only be about ten feet below the track at the west end of Rowen siding. |
