Southern Pacific Railroad piggyback train 340 at Tunnel 4 in the Tehachapi Mountains

A very late BRLAT has just come out of tunnel No. 3 and is passing the remains of Tunnel No. 4 on February 9, 1974. Tunnel No. 4 was damaged beyond repair in the 1952 earthquake. The mainline was moved over several feet and the hillside above the tunnel was used in the big fill. You can still see some of the earth work above the locomotives. Dirt from here and above tunnel No. 6 was used in a giant fill to bypass Tunnel No. 5 until it could be repaired. Because the bypass was shorter than the original route, the grade was a steep three percent. To help eastbound trains up this short stretch while repairs were made to Tunnel No. 5, a set of helper engines was assigned to Bealville. Disk 42
