Tehachapi Mountain Railroad Photographs

You are at: CarrTracks > Gallery

I grew up near the Tehachapi Mountains and honed my train chasing and photography skills there in the 70s. This series is just a portion of the many pictures that I have taken there over the years. I've tried to give a balanced view of operations there during the 70s and 80s from the bottom, to the top and down the other side. This gallery also includes a few pictures in Soledad Canyon. Someday I will complete the video "Tonnage over Tehachapi" to show you trains in action in the Tehachapi Mountains.

This gallery is a little bit different than the other galleries. Since there are over 100 Tehachapi photographs, I've divided the gallery into sections. The pages are still chained together so you can start at Kern Junction and work your way over the mountain.

John R. Signor has written an excellent book on Tehachapi and Kevin Stevens has some nice maps as well as more recent photographs of the area at www.trainweb.org/KernJunction/ (will open in another window).

Helpers on coal train at Woodford

View from one of the rear helper units looking forward toward the swing helper on a heavy coal train bound for Trona. At Woodford, the train has climbed halfway up the hill from Caliente. There are only 13 more miles to go to Summit. At this point, we are almost at the same elevation as Mojave.
