Coal train at Thompson Falls, MT

BN train AA241 is westbound near Thompson Falls, MT pulling a long string of PGEX gondolas in September 1991. The NP installed upper quadrant automatic block signals between Paradise and Sandpoint in 1914. In 1987 the Montana Rail Link took over operation of the former Northern Pacific mainline between Sandpoint , ID and Jones Jct. east of Billings, MT. Along with the track, the MRL also inherited the old NP upper quadrant semaphore signals. Photo by Nick Krantz. Disk 11
