Santa Fe semaphore signals Blanchard, NM

Santa Fe train 804, with engine 4019 in the lead, passes semaphore signals near Blanchard, NM on May 17, 1978. Blanchard is at milepost 793 (23 miles southwest of Las Vegas) on the Glorietta Sub. This train has mostly empties. Note the B unit with the radio controlled helpers are coupled onto the headend power. The train had special blocking out of Albuquerque due to the steep grades over Glorietta and Raton Passes. Coming out of Albuquerque the first block was local traffic to be set out before leaving Lamy. Then it was all loads with the empties on the rear. This made train handling over these steep grades much easier. The train was reclassified at La Junta.
