A short time later train 172 was approaching Saluda. The Spartanburg and Asheville Railroad built north from Spartanburg and reached Saluda in 1879, and Hendersonville in 1882.
The train was down to a crawl as it passed the north end of the siding at Saluda. Off to the left is the rail wear test truck that I photographed earlier in the day at Tryon. You will see it up close on the last page in this series. Disk 127
