In the late 1974, the Southern Pacific borrowed a couple engines and radio control units from the BN and was experimenting with radio controlled helpers over the Tehachapi Mountains. The master unit on this freight train will never get any closer to the slave helper set than right here at Walong, CA. The lead units of WCOAY (extra BN6807 west) have just exited Tunnel 9 as the slave helpers, engines 9294 and 9391 with RCU 112, came over the tunnel. You can see the lead units just above engine 9294. This picture was taken the hill in the middle of the loop on November 8, 1977. |
