We are on a work train in the small set off track at Vail (milepost 1003) waiting for train WCASY (Extra 9272 East) to go by.

When my brother and I made our first trip to the Cienega Bridge in 1968, we drove into Vail and then followed the M/W road on the right. It was a bumpy three mile trip out to the bridge only to discover that the old US highway 80 was within 150 feet of the bridge. You will see the highway and bridge on the next page.

There were also many semaphore signals between Vail and Mescal. This is probably my favorite picture along the Sunset Route.
