Southern Pacific ore train at Kearny

Halfway to Hayden is the little community of Kearny. The community was founded in 1958 when the open pit mine at Ray expanded. The families living at Ray, Sonora, and Barcelona were relocated to Kearny. Engines 6511, 3541, 6661, 6600, and 6562 are in charge of the 60 car copper ore shuttle train.

After dumping the ore, the train is back at the small SP yard just west of downtown Hayden. The train has stopped so the crew can get some lunch. The shuttles made four or five runs a day down to Ray Junction and back. In the yard behind the train are engines 6606 and 4140.
