For me the Sunset Route heading east out of Los Angeles really starts at Colton. On December 16, 1986 SD9s 1535 and 1500 are preparing to return to West Colton with a block of cars set out earlier by a freight train that by-passed that yard and went directly from the Sunset Route to the Palmdale Colton Cut-off. Colton is at milepost 539. This was measured from Oakland via the original route through Bakersfield and Los Angles. The Palmdale Colton Cut-off saved 41.5 miles.
