It reached Watson in late 1871, Salinas in November 1872, and Soledad in August 1873. Work started again in 1886 and reached Paso Robles in October. But work slowed in the mountains and the tracks didn't reached San Luis Obispo until May 1894. The through route was finally completed in March 1901 when the line connected with the San Joaquin Valley Route at Saugus. The Montalvo Cut-off through the Santa Susanna Mountains was completed in March 1904.
