SP train EUMEM at Wilbur, OR

The quiet peace in Wilbur, OR is broken as train EUMEY rumbles through town on August 10, 1981. The train has engines 8268, 9290, 8564, 4395, UP3213, SP8322, 9160, 4390, and 4368 pulling 22 loads and 77 empties at 5,001 tons. This would be one of the hottest days on record in the Roseburg area. The temperature would hit 116 degrees (107 in Portland). My car would soon die from vapor lock and I would lose this train.

Southern Pacific train SLE near Wilbur

On May 12, 1973 I was chasing another train on the Siskiyou Line. I had set up at this crossing near Wilbur to wait for the train. Just after the crossing bell started to ring and the warning lights flash, a car stopped by the crossing signal. Then a father and son got out of the car and waved at the train as it went by. Train SLE (Extra 8834 East) is going under Interstate 5 and is blowing for the crossing of the old US 99. Train SLE (Siskiyou Line East) handled all eastbound traffic over the Siskiyou Line. It originate in Roseville and terminated in Eugene.
