August 4, 1987 was not a good day for the Southern Pacific. FRA officials descended on the yard at Eugene and found safety violations on almost every unit in town. The CZLAT was at Dougren waiting for its helper set to be cut in. FRA officials OKed the headend power, but found multiple problems with units on the helper set. The helper set had to return to Eugene at restricted speed. The CZLAT went on up the hill without the helper. The train is stopped at Oakridge waiting for a relief crew. |
