The third section of train NCP (Extra 8859 East) breaks out from behind the cloud shadows and into full sun at Chemult (milepost 503) on May 12, 1973. Train NCP (North Coast Perishable) originated in southern California and handled perishable and manifest traffic to Eugene and Portland. The track at the far left is the BN line that heads north to Wishram. It joins the SP siding at Chemult just beyond the signal bridge. Chemult is at 4,758 feet and named for a Klamath Indian chief. The Great Northern joined the SP line here in 1928. |
