The Chemult Local (Extra 3943 West) has just entered the siding at Diamond Lake (milepost 498) on May 12, 1973. In a small building beside the hump yard lead in Eugene, a dispatcher will flip several levers on his ancient CTC machine to line the switch back to the main and give a clear signal to the approaching eastbound train.
