By timetable the train has become No. 560. The lead unit is now 8953. Note that the second unit (9110) has elephant ears. You can see the smoke from the helper set back behind the twin telephone poles. |

At Likely, the grade increases to 1.4%. The top of the hill is Sage Hen (milepost 423) at 5,850 feet in elevation, the highest point on the Modoc Line. The sun has baked most of the paint off the south side of the station sign at Sage Hen. Recent rains have made a mess out of the area. The fine dust that normally covers everything is now a gooey muck. After three steps, each of my shoes weighed about ten pounds. I had to walk in from the road as the M/W road into here was impassable. |
