Southern Pacific freight train symbol PTCIY near Lakehead, CA

The Central Valley Water Project and construction of the Shasta Dam forced SP to relocate about 37 miles of railroad north of Redding. Construction was started in 1938 and completed in 1939. Train PTCIY (Extra 9276 West) is at milepost 286 near Lakehead on June 8, 1980. This is near the northern end of the line relocation. The train had engines 9276, 9239, and 8902.
