Santa Fe freight train symbol 508 at Sais, NM

Train 508 has just rolled off the big bridge at the bottom of Abo Canyon on December 23, 1985. The conductor of extra 5039 west will soon call the yardmaster at Belen for a track and report that they have 5,102 tons. Train symbol 508 later became the QDABA. When this picture was taken, the Clovis Subdivision was mostly single track. There were 23 miles of double track between Clovis and Melrose and another 16 miles between Joffre and Vaughn. Now there are only three short single track segments left: the six miles through Abo Canyon, nine miles west of Vaughn, and the Pecos River Bridge at Fort Sumner.
