Southern Pacific Railroad freight train symbol MERVY near Medford, OR

Train MERVY has finished its work and has just left Medford on July 7, 1979. Although the train symbol makes it appear that it originated at Medford, this train is just a continuation of the long local that originated in Eugene the day before. It changed crews at Roseburg and will changes crews again at Ashland. In 1977 it was scheduled to leave Medford at 2:45AM and get into Roseville at 12:30AM the next morning. The southbound (railroad westbound) leaves Eugene with mostly empties and sets out cars at the various lumber mills along the route. It picks up loads destined for reclassification at Roseville and eastbound traffic for connections at Ogden. When the Modoc Line was in operation, the Ogden traffic was set out at Black Butte and then moved by other trains to Klamath Falls. Disk 24
