I discovered the Oregon, Pacific, & Eastern steam program quite by accident in late 1972. On the way north to rejoin my submarine at Bremerton, I had stopped in Eugene, OR to watch the trains. Since it was Sunday and few trains were running, I asked if there were still any semaphore signals left and was told to head south on the line to Roseburg. When I got to Cottage Grove, I saw an old depot and asked there if there would be any trains running. The operator told me to head east and if I was lucky I might catch the steamer on the OP&E. Almost eight years later I took this picture near Harms Park on June 7, 1980. Generally, I don't like cloudy weather pictures as there is little contrast, but this picture works. I returned one year later with my new bride and we had much nicer weather. |
