The little town of Ryan, OK (population about 900) is just north of the Red River. Its claim to fame is that Chuck Norris was born there in March 1940.

Train 26 went into the siding at Ryan, OK to meet train 23. That train was still waiting for a new crew at Waurika. I drove up to Waurika in the hope that I could chase train 23 south. After two hours of waiting the new crew finally showed up. They said they had about two hours of switching to do before they would be ready to leave. I gave up and headed south hoping to catch something at Bowie, TX, where the Rock Island crossed the old Fort Worth and Denver City mainline.

Just north of Ringgold, TX I caught the third northbound empty grain train that would be waiting at Ryan for the southbound train. Engines 290 and 293 bracket two slug units. The date was April 14, 1979. You can tell by the shadows that it was getting late in the day. It would be well after dark before I got home. Disk 86
