There are several power plants on the Kansas City Southern that use Powder River Basin coal. They are the Kansas City Power and Light La Cygne power plant near Amsterdam, MO; Empire District Electric plant at Asbury, MO; Gulf States Utilities' R. S. Nelson plant at Mossville, LA; Southwestern Electric Power Flint Creek plant at Gentry, AR and Welsh plant near Pittsburg, TX. Southwestern Electric Power was KCS's largest single customer. Coal traffic contributed 30% of KCS's operating revenue until the merger with MidSouth in 1994. |
