Crew of MKT Railroad train symbol 106 calls the dispatcher

Question: How many crew members does it take to call the dispatcher? From this picture, it looks like it takes the whole crew. The crew is calling the dispatcher to get permission to cross over the main track to get to the interchange track for the pick up.

The MKT built the interlocking tower here in 1916. It was a 12 lever mechanical interlocker. At the time these pictures were taken, the old interlocking tower was still standing. The functions had been replaced by an automatic interlocker. The control box was on the south side of the former Frisco Railway track through Durant. After a short wait train NPHOT came honking through town with engines UP 3730, 3121, MP 3063, UP 3291, and UPL 506. The NPHOT symbol began on January 17, 1983 as the BHZ (Bailey Yard to Houston Trailers) and became the NPHOT September 10, 1985.

After train NPHOT goes by the units cross over and back down the interchange track to pick up a mechanical reefer. The Missouri Pacific had a separate line running north from here and staying west of the MKT line up to Muskogee. This line was built by predecessors of the Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf in the early part of the 20th Century. It was longer than the MKT route since the MKT came through first and obtained the best route from Kansas City to Denison, TX. The KO&G route was 188 miles long between Muskogee and Denison, while the MKT route was 157 miles. The first segment to be abandoned was between Durant and Denison around 1970. During the 70s, MP freight trains 141 and 143 coming south got off the MP line between Coffeyville, KS and Fort Smith, AR at Okay Jct and then came down the old KO&G route. They used trackage rights from here at Durant to Whitesboro, TX. MKT trains used trackage rights over the Texas & Pacific from Whitesboro to Fort Worth, TX. The UP abandoned the KO&G line around 1982 after the merger and got trackage rights over the MKT from Wagoner to Durant. Disk 85
