The closest large town to Upland, Indiana (Taylor University) was Marion. Not a lot of trains moved through Marion, but on this occasion I happened to catch the local with N&W 522 switching in downtown Marion on August 25, 1982. This line was part of the old New York, Chicago & St. Louis (Nickel Plate) Railroad between Frankfort, IN and Toledo, Ohio. This segement of the line used trackage rights on a former NYC branch through Marion. The N&W acquired the Nickel Plate in 1964. This was a secondary line. The Nickel Plate mainline in the area ran through Muncie further south. Engine 522 was one of those rare high nose GP30s. Disk 116
