Santa Fe Railway tallest and longest bridge in Abo Canyon

Santa Fe Railway tallest and longest bridge in Abo Canyon Santa Fe train 508 approaching Sais, NM

Train 508 (Extra 5039 West) is coming across the tallest and longest bridge in the canyon on December 23, 1985. At this point the canyon opens up to the valley surrounding the Rio Grande. This was a really slow day as we only saw three trains all afternoon. The average number of trains per day was about 50 in the mid-90s and increased to around 80 in 2007.

Santa Fe caboose on train 508 approaching Sais

The conductor of extra 5039 west will soon call the yardmaster at Belen for a track and report that they have 5,102 tons. Train symbol 508 later became the QDABA. When this picture was taken, the Clovis Subdivision was mostly single track. There were 23 miles of double track between Clovis and Melrose and another 16 miles between Joffre and Vaughn. Now it is double track from Belen all the way to Clovis. Disk 61
