On July 25, 1988 the crew on train 408 was about to go on the law and the train still had to do work at Wingate. So the dispatcher brought train 698 along beside it near Gonzales so the crews could swap trains. In these pictures the crews have swapped trains and are accelerating westward still climbing toward the Continental Divide. Train 698 had engines 3846, 5044, and 8029 and train 408 had engines 5313, 8122, 5407, 5100, and 5141.

The five units on the 408 train are pulling 105 cars with a total weight of over 10 thousand tons. The Continental Divide crossing is in the cut about a quarter mile ahead at an elevation of 7,248 feet.
