Train 199 (Extra 5677 West) roars through South Chavez late in the day on October 30, 1977. This is another section where the mainlines are split apart. The north main is about a quarter mile away running at the bottom of the valley. Between Baca and Thoreau, the south track stays a fairly constant 0.6% grade while the north track has sections that are up to 1.04%. The elevation here is 7,000 feet. Disk 64 |

Eleven years later, I caught a picture of the caboose of train 318 near Pegs and the headend at South Chavez on July 23, 1988. Train 318 had engines 8090, 8124, 8127, 5370, and 5810. |
