On May 17, 1978 EMD (General Motors) was testing a new engine with a new HT-B truck design. X9000 is at Lamy with the test train. The unit was built in December 1977 and did extensive testing in early 1978. It was sold to the Union Pacific as engine 9000, renumbered to 90 in 1985, and then renumber to 954 in 1990. The UP bought five similar units and most of these were retired in 2001. The Santa Fe did buy 10 GP40x units but they had Blomberg trucks.
Engine 5740 was one of seven SD45X locomotives built in 1970. The Southern Pacific acquired six and EMD kept this one.
The test train heads west and will soon be going 90mph testing the ride and tracking quality of the new truck. Disk 63
