The 20 Santa Fe SD39s were built in 1969 for service on the York Canyon to Kaiser coal trains. After the SD26s took over this assignment in 1973, the SD39s were used primarily in Kansas, Colorado, and on the 804 and 408 trains over Raton Pass. In late 1985 or early 1986 all of the units were renumbered into the 1556 number series and repainted in the ill fated SFSP merger paint scheme. In late 1990, they were repainted into the more traditional Santa Fe freight war bonnet scheme. A couple years after the BNSF merger, they were renumbered into the BNSF 6200 series. Disk 63
