I returned to Grand Island and waited at the junction hoping to see some BN coal trains before chasing a UP train east. The first action I caught at the junction was the BN local. The UP built through Grand Island in 1866. The Burlington line to Billings, MT reached Grand Island in 1876. In 1926, the CB&Q added GRS color light signals between Grand Island and Ravenna. The BN built a bridge over the UP mainline in 1995 to speed up operations in Grand Island.
I waited about two hours before the next train. Engine 305 leads train symbol Advanced CRP (Conrail Perishable and Manifest) past the interlocking tower on June 20, 1980. Train ACRP was scheduled out of North Platte at 800AM. The interlocking tower was closed in 1983. The GP9 would be removed at Fremont and CNW engine 5057 would take over as the lead unit of CNW train 274. The train would run through to Blue Island in Chicago and connect with Conrail trains PXSE to Selkirk and PXEN to Enola Yard. Disk 78
