Empty coal train at Crawford, NE

A year earlier (June 19, 1980), engines 5023, 5091, MP 3393, 6019, and 6030 lead a train of empties from Whitebluff, AR across the CNW Cowboy Line at Crawford, NE. The train will load at the Cordero mine. Disk 82

Occasionally during the early 1980s, the BN would interchange a unit coal train here with the C&NW. BN's monopoly on the Powder River Basin ended in 1984, when C&NW got financing from the Union Pacific. It refurbished part of the Cowboy Line and built some brand new trackage to connect the southern end of BN Orin Line with the Union Pacific at South Morrill.

If you would like more information on UP and BNSF coal trains, you should get my book. Look for the 2008 compendium near the bottom of the books page.
