The Georgia, Carolina & Northern Railroad started at Monroe in 1887 and built to Atlanta. It reached Chester, SC in 1888 and reached Atlanta in 1892. It was merged into the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1901. SAL ordered automatic block signals for Monroe to Atlanta 269 miles in 1944. This project was completed by the end of 1945.
