The train has stopped giving Jack a chance to photograph the motive power. Due to a dispute with the union, which wanted a crew in every cab of a diesel locomotive consist, the Santa Fe ordered FTs in ABBB sets. Engines 105LABC through 151LABC were in this configuration. These engines were built between March of 1942 and June 1944. After that the union relented and the Santa Fe ordered FTs in ABBA sets. |

Atop the first reefer in the train, Jack has decided to see the view from the brakeman's perspective. The grade decreases to 95 feet per mile at Maze and the east and westbound tracks run side by side into Ash Fork. |
