Beyond Rio Puerco the double track splits. The original mainline had grades that varied from near level to one percent (52.8 feet per mile). The Santa Fe added the second mainline south of the original line between Rio Puerco and the Contennental Divide. Most of the time the trackage looks like regular double track, but in a few places like here at South Garcia, the westbound main takes a little longer route to limit the climb to 31.7 feet per mile. |
