Santa Fe Railway at Scholle, NM

Jack's train is on the mainline. The helper on the rear of the eastbound train is a Santa Fe type. Engine 1699 is in a group of 2-10-2s built by Baldwin between 1912 and 1913.

Train 943 (Extra 5011 East) charges up the hill toward Mountainair on February 21, 1974. The train is almost in the same spot as the picture above taken by Jack Delano almost 31 years earlier. Highway 60 used to go under the tracks at the bridge to the right edge of the picture.

Engine 976 is one of the oldest 2-10-2s on the Santa Fe. This group of Santa Fe types were built by Baldwin between 1903 and 1904. Looks like this work train just barely fit in the house track at Scholle.
