The territory may look flat, but the train has been climbing steadily at almost 32 feet per mile since leaving the big bridge over the Pecos River at Fort Sumner. Largo is at milepost 749.6 at an elevation of almost 5,000 feet.

Six miles later the train goes into the whole at Buchanan to meet another eastbound train.
