The engineer must have kept the speed down for a slow order between Mount Vernon and Mechanicsville as the speed picked up considerably after leaving Mechanicsville. I noticed an old DD35B nine cars back in the consist of train 272. When I stopped at Clarence, I missed the headend but did manage to catch a picture of the 78B on its last trip east on June 21, 1980. The locomotive shop at North Platte has removed as much equipment that will be useful on other units. They have even taken the red letters that spell out Union Pacific.

Eight years later (October 26, 1988) train PRNPT heads west through Clarence with engines 5078, UP 3420, and 957. Disk 79
